Indiana State Police investigate officer-involved shooting in Jasper County

JASPER CO. –  The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, is investigating an officer-involved shooting.

Preliminary investigations by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post revealed that today, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on State Road 14 East of County Road 475 East. This location is near the Pulaski County line on State Road 14. During the traffic stop, the officer attempted to arrest the suspect, but the suspect resisted. An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect. The investigation also shows that during the traffic stop, the suspect had a firearm.

The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office. The Jasper County Coroner will release the identity of the deceased once identification and family notification have been made.

This investigation is ongoing, and no further information can be released. Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review.
