BLOOMINGTON – According to a statement on the Office of Student Life’s website, Indiana University has issued a cease and desist order against the Sigma Chi fraternity’s Lambda Chapter following hazing allegations. Effective November 6, this disciplinary action suspends all fraternity activities until further notice as an investigation is conducted.

The cease and desist order is implemented when there is an immediate concern regarding safety or an ongoing investigation into potential misconduct. This measure may lead to disciplinary probation, under which any breach of the stipulated conditions or additional misconduct could result in more severe penalties, such as suspension or expulsion from the university.
Sigma Chi’s Lambda Chapter did not respond to requests for comment on the disciplinary action. An IU spokesperson confirmed that the investigation remains open.
Sigma Chi is one of several student organizations facing disciplinary action this semester. The Indiana Student Association was placed on cease and desist last month due to hazing and alcohol-related violations, while the IU chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi received a similar order in October for hazing violations.
Last academic year, their national leadership suspended two Greek organizations at IU. The IU chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity faced suspension for endangering others and engaging in hazing, while the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was suspended for hazing, dishonest conduct, and retaliation. Unlike cease and desist orders, Suspension requires the organization to disband for a specified duration determined by the Administrative Conference Panel and the dean of students.
IU officials continue to emphasize that maintaining a safe, respectful environment is paramount, and violations of student conduct policies are taken seriously.
