Overnight I-70 crash claims one life

INDIANAPOLIS- At 12:33 a.m. Indiana State Troopers, IFD, and IEMS responded to reports of a serious crash in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the 77-mile marker. Callers were reporting an unresponsive person lying in the roadway. When first responders arrived, they found multiple vehicles stopped on both sides of the road, along with three heavily damaged cars. An adult female was lying in the roadway and was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

A preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists determined that a vehicle had struck the outside barrier wall, came across all lanes, and hit the inside wall, coming to rest partially in the left lane. While the driver of that vehicle was standing outside the car, another vehicle struck her car, causing her to be thrown into the roadway, where she was then hit by another car.

All involved vehicles remained at the scene, and at this time, neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to have contributed to this crash. The Marion County Coroner responded to the scene to recover the remains of the deceased.

The westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for four hours while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared. All lanes have since re-opened.

The circumstances of this crash are still under investigation. There is no further information to release at this time.
