Honoring Mark Scherschel and his lifetime of service

BEDFORD— The Hoosier Trails Council Boy Scouts of America and the City of Bedford invite you to a breakfast to honor Mark Scherschel for his lifetime service in scouting and as an elected official.

Mark demonstrated leadership principles as a Scoutmaster and City Council Member, significantly impacting lives in his troop and the Bedford community for over 25 years.

The public is invited to a breakfast on Friday, May 3rd, at 7:30 a.m. at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 518 Fellowship Drive.

Mark was born on December 10, 1949, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford to Dr. John P. and Tressie S. Scherschel.

He lived at 1713 H Street until going to Indiana University in 1968. He attended kindergarten at Parkview and then at St. Vincent de Paul School for eight years.

In high school, Mark played the trombone in the band and was track/cross county manager. He earned the Eagle Scout Rank in 1964.

Mark graduated from Bedford High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Zoology and an MBA in Health Care Administration, with a minor in accounting at Indiana University.

He delivered newspapers for the Indianapolis Star for six years and worked at Boy Scout camp for six years as a lifeguard, shooting sports director, and camp director.

Mark also worked as an orderly at Bloomington Hospital from 1971 to 1972. He worked for a small public accounting firm in Terre Haute from 1976 to 1982, becoming a Certified Public Accountant in 1979.

He operated a public accounting firm in Bedford from 1982-1987. He taught Accounting and business-related courses at Oakland City University in Bedford from 1982-1984 and 2000 and at Ivy Tech Community College in 2006.

Mark was the Controller and Chief Financial Officer at South Central Community Mental Health Centers from 1984 to 1998, the controller at Indiana Limestone Company from 1999 to 2006, and the Chief Financial Officer for a regional property management company based in Ellettsville from 2006 to 2017.

He served on Bedford City Council from 1987 and was elected to eight successive terms.

Mark served as precinct chairman when living in Terre Haute. Served on Lawrence County Community Corrections board as a member and president for 20 years, served on the Board of Bedford Revitalization, Inc. from its inception until 2006.

As a city council member at large, he served on the salary committee, tax abatement committee, Redevelopment Commission, White River Port Authority, and Historic Review Board and was President of the Council. 

He is a St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church member and the church choir.

Mark played trombone in the community band and is a past member of Terre Haute Rotary, Bedford Kiwanis, BPOE of Bedford, and the Bedford Dulcimer Society.

For more than 50 years, he has been a member of the Boy Scouts, serving more than 30 years in various district-level positions as well as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for Pack and Troop 333.

He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 40 years.

Mark married Susan June Larkin in 1980. They have four sons, Mark Eric II, Christopher Kent, John Scott, and Steven Travis. Mark and Susan have a horse farm for boarding and teaching horsemanship skills.
