Man captured after police find him hiding in a storage unit he had broken into

BEDFORD – A Bedford man is facing meth, burglary, and criminal mischief charges after Bedford Police officers responded on Friday, April 12, at 5:52 a.m. to a report of a suspicious male captured on surveillance video attempting to enter storage units at Storage Express in the 900 block of O Street.

The male caller was able to give police a description of the male. Major Jeremy Bridges, Sgt. Justin Dodds, Officers Joshua Turner, Brian Sorrells, Robert Harris, Steven Hatton Jr. and Aaron Manke responded.

When police arrived, they searched the area on foot for the male. Footprints were found in the soil in front of the storage units.

Major Bridges and Officer Hatton then heard a noise and began searching the area. They saw the door of one of the storage units slightly open. Inside, police found 41-year-old Travis Sanders. He was detained, and in his pocket, police found a pair of side-cut pliers. They also found a cut lock and clasp belonging to one of the storage units.

Sanders told police he had a friend who rented one of the storage units, and the friend had got locked out of it. The friend had asked Sanders to cut the lock and retrieve his items for him. When asked if Sanders had broken into other units, he said no, he was just looking but then admitted he did enter other units.

Police found that Sanders had broken into two storage units.

Police also found Sanders with two small metal containers, one containing a clear capsule and a baggie with a crystal-like substance. Sanders admitted the capsule and baggie contained crystal meth.

Officers located Sanders’s vehicle parked at the former Whitney Tool factory at 10th and O Streets. No stolen items were found in the vehicle. His wife was contacted to retrieve the vehicle.
