Fire destroys Bedford’s Laundry Village

BEDFORD — Bedford Fire Department firefighters responded to a fire reported at Laundry Village at 3:55 a.m. Thursday.

The laundry mat is located at 515 Lincoln Avenue in Bedford.

From Facebook, Brent Ray took the photo from the Hometown IGA parking lot facing west. The old domed roof and most of the upper living quarters are gone.

A motorist passing by reported the blaze, which quickly spread. Smoke and flames could be seen from miles away.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained and spread to nearby structures.

Lincoln Avenue between 5th and 6th and O Streets between Lincoln Avenue and 6th Street were closed while firefighters battled the blaze.

The wall of the building collapsed around 3:20 a.m.

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

There were minor explosions, possibly from laundry chemicals in the laundry mat.

According to Fire Chief Luke Pinnick, firefighters are still on the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The State Fire Marshal has been contacted and is responding to the scene. 

Bedford Police Department officers, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies, an IU LifeLine Ambulance crew, and Duke Energy workers responded to the scene to assist.
