ISP Versailles detectives investigating an inmate death

On Friday, March 15, 2024, detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post responded to the Jefferson County Jail in Madison, Indiana, to investigate the death of an inmate at the request of the Jefferson County Sheriff.

The initial investigation indicates that the Hanover Police Department arrested 44-year-old Misty Williams, 44, Hanover, and transported her to the Jefferson County Jail shortly before 9:00 p.m. Thursday on charges of neglect of a dependent, possession of meth, unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe and maintaining a common nuisance.

At approximately 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Williams was found unresponsive in the jail.  Jail staff attempted to provide life-saving medical care to Williams.  EMS soon arrived to provide further treatment. However, she was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.

A forensic autopsy is scheduled to be performed in Hamilton County, Ohio, to determine the cause of death.  At this time, no foul play is suspected.

Misty Williams’ family has been notified.

The Indiana State Police has been assisted in this investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
