Obituary: Bernard Michael ‘Mike’ Gallagher

December 17, 1946 – February 27, 2024

Bernard Michael “Mike” Gallagher died peacefully at East Community Hospital in Indianapolis on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Born December 17, 1946, in Bedford, Indiana, Mike was the son of Joyce Hatfield Gallagher and Bernard “Barney” Gallagher. 

He is survived by his son, Damon Gallagher, his partner Rosie Sanchez, and their son, Liam Sanchez Gallagher, of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico. Also, two sisters and one brother. Margaret Simmerman (Gordon) Harrodsburg, Debbie Hicks (Mike) of Lawrence County, and brother Tom Gallagher of Bloomington.

He graduated from Fayetteville High School in Lawrence County and then enrolled at Indiana University, where he earned a degree in Microbiology. Immediately after graduating I U, he entered the army and did a tour in Vietnam. After military service, he started his business selling materials to large-scale manufacturers.

Mike had a tremendous yearning for adventure and left business life to travel and experience its many wonders. He traveled to Ireland, China, Thailand, India, Egypt, Africa, South America, and Europe. Whether observing the procession of Mother Teresa walking in front of him or being photographed kneeling in the African jungle with a giant silverback gorilla behind him, he was living life to the fullest. He loved people and loved to interact with anyone he met. He knew no strangers. He always had a fantastic story to tell, a gift to give you, or about something new and unique you had never heard of.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cremation Society of Indiana.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 17th, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Brick Room Gallery located at 107 N. College Ave., on the west side of the Courthouse Square. in downtown Bloomington, IN.
