Indiana State Police investigate death of Allen County inmate

FORT WAYNE – At the request of the Allen County Sheriff, the Indiana State Police is investigating the death of an inmate at the Allen County Jail.

ISP’s preliminary investigation has found that on Monday, February 26, 2024, at approximately 7:03 p.m., inmates housed in “6C Block” alerted jail staff to an unresponsive inmate.  The inmate was identified as Steven M. Perry Jr., 27, of Fort Wayne.

Jail and nursing staff responded, located Perry still unresponsive, and immediately began medical care until EMS personnel arrived.  Perry was transported by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Earlier this morning, as part of the ongoing investigation, an autopsy was conducted by the Allen County Corner at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center. Toxicology results from that autopsy are pending. The cause and manner of death remains pending with the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Perry had been incarcerated in the Allen County Jail since January 31, 2024.

This is an ongoing investigation. No further information is available for release at this time.
