Secretary Diego Morales credentialed as International Election Observer in El Salvador

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales is returning from El Salvador, where he served as a credentialed International Election Observer for that country’s Presidential and legislative elections on Sunday, February 4.

During the brief visit to El Salvador, Secretary Morales met with the government election administrators, representatives of international election monitoring organizations, poll workers, and voters. He visited several polling locations during voting for a comprehensive election assessment. While in the capital city of San Salvador, Secretary Morales met with U.S. Embassy officials to provide an update from Indiana and personally thanked American officials for their continued hard work on behalf of our country. He also received a briefing at the Embassy on the election and critical migration issues.

“This was a valuable opportunity to gain and share perspectives on election processes. I was honored to represent Indiana and share knowledge about how elections are held in our state. Transparent and observed elections are trusted. Open and observed elections are hallmarks of democracy, and support of democracy is a highly important aspect of managing the international migration crisis. For years, I’ve been focused on learning the root causes of migration. I sincerely thank the people of El Salvador for being welcoming and open, and I look forward to a continued partnership,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.

Secretary Morales is a veteran International Election Observer, serving on his first mission long before assuming his official post as Indiana’s Chief Election Officer.  Last year, Secretary Morales organized and led a bipartisan delegation of Indiana county clerks, university faculty, and election administrators to Guatemala to observe their elections.

Secretary Morales continues to look beyond the state’s borders. Since the start of his administration, Secretary Morales has welcomed international diplomats into the Secretary of State’s Office, including Ambassadors, Consul Generals, and trade delegations from El Salvador, Central America, and worldwide.

The election observation mission was sponsored by non-governmental organizations; no agency or taxpayer funds were used.  Pictures from the trip can be found here: https://we.tl/t-9P5mHnmFbb.
