Residence in Norman burns, man injured

NORMAN– A residential fire in Norman on Thursday afternoon left a home in ruin and a man with minor burns.

Fire departments from Jackson and Lawrence counties responded to the call of a person trapped in a burning home just before 1 p.m. on Thursday. The home was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

Michael Young, who was in the house when the fire broke out, was able to get free of the blaze before emergency personnel arrived. Young suffers from medical issues that made it difficult for him to exit the home, and his daughter was able to help him out of the house safely.

Young was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital, where he was treated for what were called minor burns to his back. Young’s daughter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

According to firefighters, Young was possibly smoking a cigarette while using oxygen and fell asleep. Young was awakened to flames ripping through his home.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 5:30 p.m. when the fire rekindled at about 7:30 p.m. Despite the firefighter’s efforts, the home was a complete loss.

Firefighters from Brownstown, Carr Township, Owen Township, Pershing, and Salt Creek Township Volunteer Fire Departments in Jackson County responded, and Pleasant Run Township and Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Departments, IU Lifeline Ambulance from Lawrence County responded to the fire.
