The Program of Academic Exchange seeks families to host international students

LAWRENCE COUNTY– Exchange student programs are crucial as they foster cultural understanding, break down stereotypes, and promote global harmony. These programs cultivate open-mindedness, language proficiency, and lifelong connections by immersing students in different cultures, contributing to a more interconnected and tolerant world.

The Program of Academic Exchange, or PAX, is dedicated to bringing diverse cultures to our communities. It is a U.S. Department of State-sponsored program to promote positive international relationships through cultural exchange. The program focuses on countries formerly part of the Soviet Union and Muslim countries.

PAX is looking for families to host students for a semester or a full academic year. While it is a great way to learn other people’s way of life and share our customs, hosting a PAX student is so much more.”I was hesitant to become part of the exchange family,” said Kristi Brown, a representative of PAX and host, “but we have become a permanent part of each other’s lives.” She continued saying that after their time in the U.S., many students worldwide return to the extended family they built while there.

Prospective exchange students undergo an extensive vetting process before a match is made with a host family. Families who host students come from all walks of life and locations around the country.
