Commercial Turkey Farm in Daviess County tests positive for avian influenza

INDIANA – The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reports a commercial turkey farm in Daviess County has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The flock of 13,071 birds is under quarantine and marks the first positive commercial flock in Indiana in more than a year.

It is the first time since 2022 that a commercial flock in Indiana has had a positive test.

A 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) control area known as “Daviess 02” has been established around the flock. The area includes 45 commercial flocks and 48 hobby/backyard flocks. It is within Daviess County.

A 20-kilometer (12.4 miles) surveillance zone, which encompasses 56 commercial flocks, has been established and includes portions of Daviess, Martin, and Greene counties.

Testing will be done at nearby flocks to determine whether HPAI has spread.

State officials add that Avian influenza does not present a food safety risk and that poultry and eggs are safe to eat. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) considers the risk to human health to be very low.
