BNL’s Arellano wins his division during Old Capitol Classic

CORYDON – Bedford North Lawrence’s Junior Arellano won his weight class in the Old Capitol Classic during high school wrestling action on Saturday.

Arellano dominated at 285, while Jorj Filler (126) and Ethan Stancombe (165) finished second in their respective divisions. The Stars were ninth in the 14-team field with 102.5 points, while Milan won the team title with 259.5.

Arellano rolled through his first three matches with pins. He flattened Evansville Central’s Chance Stiles in 1:58, topped Henry Clay’s Jean Louis Mokweke in 1:19, then stopped Belleville West’s Kenwyn Horne in 5:23 in the semifinal. In the championship battle, Arellano conquered Evansville North’s Brady Reeves by a 7-1 decision.

Filler, who moved into second place on the school’s career wins list with 102, defeated Henry Clay’s Elliott Ortinski 6-2 in his opener, pinned Gibson Southern’s Jax Coleman in 4:26, then blasted Meade County’s Patrick Durbin 15-0 in the semifinal. Belleville West’s Tyson Seibel defeated Filler 6-3 in the final.

Stancombe pinned Henry Clay’s Msabaha Sumaili in 1:17 in his quarterfinal match, then smashed Meade County’s Adam Sanders by a 17-2 count in the semifinal. Evansville North’s Matthew Pegram edged Stancombe 8-6 in the final.

The Stars will visit Pike Central on Tuesday.
