BNL boys win team title at Mt. Vernon

BNL’s Garrett Gabhart won the 100 backstroke during the Mt. Vernon Invitational on Saturday.

MT. VERNON – Bedford North Lawrence won the team title at the Mt. Vernon Invitational during boys high school swimming action on Saturday.

The Stars won two events while relying on depth to total 358 points in the five-team field. In the girls meet, BNL finished third with 286 while Tell City won with 345.

In the boys meet, BNL’s Garrett Gabhart raced to a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (56.79). He also combined with Isaiah Eicle, Jayden Duke and Oliver Brown to claim the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.12.

BNL got second-place finishes from Eicle (1:58.28 in the 200 free and 5:31.88 in the 500 free), Gabhart (2:07.28 in the 200 individual medley) and Isaiah Conner (1:00.88 in the 100 butterfly).

In the girls meet, BNL’s Ava Lipp touched first in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.24, while Cookie King was second in the 100 butterfly (1:08.01).

“On the boys side, we only won a couple of events,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “This is a big change from last year where we won every event. Depth brought home the team win.

“The girls improved over last year by a large margin. Although we closed the gap where points are concerned, it wasn’t quite enough to catch Tell City and Mt. Vernon.”

BNL will host Bloomington South on Tuesday.
