Firefighters battle blaze at abandoned house

MITCHELL – Firefighters from Marion and Shawswick Townships and Huron Volunteer Fire Department extinguished an abandoned house fire on Wesley Chapel Road, near the intersection of Motocross Road.

Several residents dialed 911 to report the fire at 6:45 p.m.

According to Marion VFD Chief Paul Gillespie, Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department firefighters were requested to provide an extra tanker and manpower.

When Marion Engine 52 arrived, firefighters found a single-story home fully involved in fire and already on the ground.

Property owners were on the scene and were demolishing the building.

According to Chief Gillespie, the property owner stated they had a controlled fire in the back of the property that had spread to the structure.

REMC was contacted due to direct flame impingement on powerlines in front of the structure.

The fire was brought under control, and the back quarter of the structure was left burning for debris for the demolition of the structure by the property owner.

All fire units cleared the scene at 8:28 p.m.
