Man arrested after canine alerts officers to drugs in vehicle

MITCHELL – On Friday, December 22, at approximately 12:10 a.m. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Captain Harrison Fleetwood and Deputy Kenton Carter conducted a traffic stop along State Road 37 near Doc Hamilton Boulevard.

The driver, Jerry Hunt, 43, of New Castle, Kentucky, did not have a valid driver’s license.

Officers suspected possible drug activity and requested canine assistance. Bedford Police Sgt. Faheem Bade and his canine partner Zazu gave a positive alert on the vehicle. Officers then conducted a search and located approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine, a handgun, a small amount of heroin, and drug paraphernalia.

Officers arrested Hunt on charges of possession of meth over 10 grams with a firearm, possession of a narcotic drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
