INDIANA – Not all heroes wear capes. Some volunteer to help hardworking families get ahead financially by filing their taxes for free.
As a Tax Hero, you can directly help people along their path of financial empowerment. Join our supportive team of Free Community Tax Service volunteers and help others cross this dreaded task off their list.
The Free Community Tax Service provides ree federal and state income tax preparation to low- and moderate-income residents in south central Indiana from January to April.
Tax sites are located in Brown, Monroe, and Owen counties – but residents from any nearby county are welcome to make an appointment.
Last year, Tax Heroes helped local families file more than 850 returns, bringing back nearly $1 million in refunds and credits, and saving residents as much as $395,000 in tax preparation fees.

What volunteer opportunities are available?
- Greeters: Welcomes clients, assists with the intake process and administrative tasks
- Bilingual Interpreters: Assists with communication between a tax preparer and client
- Intake Specialists*: Assists with the drop-off of tax documents and/or the virtual tax process
- Tax Preparers*: Prepares accurate tax returns
- Quality Reviewers*: Reviews completed tax returns
- Assistant Site Coordinator*: Oversees the tax site
*IRS certification required. Free training in income tax law and tax preparation to become IRS-certified is provided.
Is any prior experience needed?
No prior experience is necessary for most positions. Volunteers must pass an IRS certification exam if working directly with taxes. Training is offered to ensure volunteers are prepared to obtain certification.
What is the time commitment?
Typically, volunteers commit to at least one 3-4 hour shift per week during tax season (end of January through early April); flexible scheduling options are available.
