Woman arrested after slamming on the brakes in front of patrol car

BEDFORD – A Mitchell woman was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a Bedford Police officer stopped her vehicle on Tuesday, December 12.

Police detained 28-year-old Dyana Sims on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, endangerment, and OWI.

On Tuesday, at 3:29 a.m. Officer Landon Jones was on patrol on State Road 37 near John Williams Boulevard when the vehicle in front of him slammed on the brakes and completely stopped on the highway.

The sudden action caused the officer to nearly collide with the rear of the vehicle.

Officer Jones initiated a traffic stop.

Sims was the driver, and she had a backseat adult male passenger.

Sims told the officer the brakes on her vehicle failed and locked up, causing her vehicle to come to a complete stop in the middle of the highway. The officer said Sims showed signs of being intoxicated.

She told police she had just gotten off work in Bloomington and was on her way home.

She failed several field sobriety tests. She admitted to drinking Cranberry Vodka and Sprite.

Sims had a blood-alcohol content of 0.170. She was detained and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
