Bloomington Fire Dept. Chief Jason Moore resigns, Roger Kerr named interim fire chief

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Fire Chief Jason Moore has resigned just under a week after Mayor-elect Kerry Thomson announced she would reappoint him to the position next year.

Moore who has served as chief since 2016, announced his resignation in a letter delivered to Mayor John Hamilton on Monday letter.. 

“Even though the mayor-elect has opted to reappoint me as the fire chief, I believe the city and department deserve a leader who is in alignment with the future trajectory and vision of the new leadership,” Moore wrote. 

His resignation is effective Dec. 31. Moore did not say his reasons and did not want to make a public comment about his decision.

Kerr, who has been with the department since 1988, previously served as its chief from 2008 to 2014. A current battalion chief, Kerr has held the rank of firefighter, engineer, ariel technician, and captain over his career. He will assume the position on January 1, 2024.

“Chief Kerr will bring experience and a steady hand to the Bloomington Fire Department, and I am grateful he has agreed to step up once again.”  

As with other department leadership vacancies, Thomson and her team will search to find the best person possible to fill the fire chief’s position permanently.
