Rockville incarcerated population donates $3,376 to Susan G. Komen Foundation

ROCKVILLE – The incarcerated population of the Rockville Correctional Facility donated $3,376 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Central Indiana in what has become an annual event in recent years.  Over the past four years, RCF’s incarcerated population donations total over $9,400 for Komen.

The fundraiser allowed the incarcerated population to order Krispy Kreme doughnuts at prices comparable to public supermarket costs.  The proceeds remaining after the costs of product and delivery comprise the donation.

Nearly 1,000 adult females are incarcerated at RCF.  Given the significantly higher numbers of females diagnosed with breast cancer, the RCF population has a particular affinity for the Komen Foundation.

Through this partnership, educational opportunities have led to the creation of a Hope Awareness Group.  This group is made up of members of the incarcerated population who currently have a cancer diagnosis, have beaten cancer, or have a close family member affected with cancer.  The group offers an open discourse on shared experiences with their journeys.  The Hope Awareness Group accomplishes its namesake, offering hope to those who need it most when it is most needed.

Lori Mitchell, development Specialist for Indiana and Kentucky, was on hand to accept the donation on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Lori has assisted RCF’s efforts to keep the incarcerated population informed and engaged by providing educational materials and support when necessary.

If you or someone you care about needs information or support regarding breast cancer management, please contact www.Komen.org or call 1 (877) GO KOMEN. Donations can be made using these contact points as well.
