IDEM hosting event for Statewide Relaunch of Clean Community Program

INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is launching a new, streamlined program to encourage and recognize municipalities that take a proactive, positive approach to addressing community and social issues through sustainable environmental and wellness projects.

IDEM invites municipalities and community partners interested in participating in the new Indiana Clean Community Program to join the Indiana Clean Community Kickoff and Annual Meeting next week on Zoom.

In addition to the statewide launch, IDEM will honor six pilot program communities for their participation and accomplishments. From April 2021 – Nov. 2023, five out of the six communities earned Silver Status; the remaining community earned Bronze Status. Representatives from these communities are expected to attend the meeting and discuss their participation in the program and the success of their projects.

The Clean Community Program replaces the Indiana Clean Community Challenge, which started in the early 2000s. After feedback from pilot program communities, IDEM retooled the program to accept a broader range of projects, encourage cooperation and partnerships with residents and businesses, and remove time-consuming paperwork requirements.

In addition, representatives from communities participating in the pilot program (Beech Grove, Brown County, Fishers, Merrillville, Richmond, and Zionsville) are expected to attend the meeting and discuss their participation in the program and the success of their projects.
