Intoxicated driver traveling wrong way causes crash

COLUMBUS – A wrong-way crash on US 31 Saturday morning led to the driver’s arrest on marijuana and OWI charges.

According to the Columbus Police Department, witnesses reported a driver traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes of US 31 near 25th Street and National Road. A short time later, it was reported the driver crashed into some trees near the intersection with Beam Road.

Officers arrived and found the driver, 29-year-old Tomas Soria, of Columbus, had climbed out of the passenger door due to the extensive damage to the truck.

Police say Soria was impaired and there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Soria admitted he had smoked marijuana about a half hour earlier.

During a search of the truck police found marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Soria failed field sobriety tests and was detained. He was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw. He was then transported to jail on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
