Mitchell man arrested after tailgating incident on State Road 37

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was arrested after he was stopped for erratic driving after leaving the Marathon station on State Road 37.

The incident happened on Monday, at 12:30 a.m.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Shaun Cabral was on patrol when he noticed two vehicles exit the Marathon station parking lot and traveling south on State Road 37. The driver of a Honda Civic was tailgating the Chevrolet HHR. Both vehicles then entered the left lane and the Honda Civic passed the HHR via the right lane, then immediately cut off the driver of the HHR by entering the left lane within feet of the HHR.

The driver of the Civic then exited State Road 37 onto Main Street. The driver of the HHR followed. Upon turning on Main Street, the HHR turned into the Shell station parking lot and stopped. The driver of the Civic was exceeding the posted 25-mile-per-hour speed limit.

The officer followed the Civic and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of 11th and Brook streets.

Stephen Stidham

Deputy Cabral spoke to the driver Kristapher Canfield and his passenger 54-year-old Stephen Stidham. Oolitic Town Marshal James Harrington arrived on the scene with his canine partner Deny Joe.

Officers then learned that Stidham was wanted on an active warrant in Florida.

Deny Joe alerted officers to drugs in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, police found a baggie containing two grams of crystal meth. Stidham admitted the meth belonged to him.

He was detained on a charge of possession of meth and transported to jail.
