Indiana’s workplace injuries and illnesses are the lowest in the state’s history

INDIANA – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released the annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses data for 2022 – with Indiana having the lowest rate in the state’s history.

The 2022 report shows that Indiana’s rate was an estimated 2.9 workplace injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers, compared to a 3.2 rate in 2021. At the inception of the SOII program in 1992, the overall nonfatal injury and illness rate was 11.0 injuries per 100 full-time workers. The rate reached a high of 11.3 in 1994 and has since decreased by 74.34%. The 2022 estimated rate marks the eighth consecutive year that the rate has been below 4.0.

“2022 was a highly encouraging year in reducing injuries and illnesses among Hoosier workers,” said Indiana Department of Labor Commissioner David Redden. “We see the strides that employers continue to make in improving workplace health and safety on the whole. The Indiana Department of Labor will continue to work with Hoosier companies across the state to drive this trend.”
