Indiana State Police enlisted in investigation of Greene County inmate death

WESTVILLE –  On Tuesday, November 7, the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post was contacted by the Westville Correctional Facility to investigate an inmate’s death that had been discovered at 8:00 a.m.

Preliminary investigation shows that John R. Taylor, 35, from Greene County, Indiana, died from blunt force trauma as determined through an autopsy by the LaPorte County Coroner.

Taylor was serving sentences for felony convictions out of Greene County. Taylor was sentenced on May 5, 2023, to 12 years with four years suspended to run concurrently with a prior sentence on a charge of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, sentenced to one year and 180 days on a charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to run consecutively with the prior sentence and to one year on a charge of intimidation to run concurrently with his prior sentencing.

His earlier possible release date was February 1, 2030.

His family has been notified of his death.

This is an ongoing criminal investigation.  Once completed, the case will be turned over to the LaPorte County Prosecutor for consideration of charges.
