Canine Dusty sniffs out illegal drugs, woman detained

BEDFORD – A Heltonville woman was arrested on Saturday, November 4th after a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped her vehicle when she failed to use her turn signal.

Deputy Brenten Trueblood was on patrol in the area of Mitchell Road and 30th Street when he noticed a female driver in a white car fail to use her turn signal turning onto 22nd Street from Mitchell Road.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and the driver 50-year-old Erin Evans stopped at Custom Cycles in the 1000 block of 22nd Street.

Deputy Trueblood explained the reason for stopping her and noticed Evans was “breathing rapidly”. When asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle Evans said no in a defensive tone. Deputy Trueblood said Evans was nervous.

Officer Josh Rhoades and his canine partner Dusty arrived on the scene. Dusty alerted deputies to possible drugs in the vehicle.

In Evans’ purse officers found a baggie containing 1.30 grams of crystal meth, a black smoking device, a black cylinder containing marijuana, and a brass smoking device.

Evans was detained on charges of possession of meth with enhancing circumstances, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
