County receives $1 million in Community Crossing funds, bridge work progressing

BEDFORD – Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb updated the commissioners Tuesday morning on bridgework and the award of $1 Million in community crossing funds.

Lawrence County was one of 188 communities receiving funds. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. The Community Crossings initiative has provided nearly $1.5 billion in state-matching funds for local road improvement projects since 2016.

Bridge 36 on Locust Road, just west of State Road 446 has been closed indefinitely since August after inspectors deemed the bridge structurally deficient.  The 1999 bridge spans the South Fork of Leatherwood Creek.

The council approved Webb’s request for an additional $298,665 to fund the super-structure replacement of Bridge 36 on Locust Road in October.

“Crews have removed the beams and are moving right along,” added Webb.

Bridge 107 on Armstrong Station Road is a historic landmark, all work must be approved by the state historical review board. The commissioner signed a $29,000 contract Tuesday morning to have that work started.

“Due to it being a historical bridge we must seek an analysis to see what we need to do to move forward,” she added.
