Life lost in fiery crash on rural road in Bartholomew County

COLUMBUS — A life was lost in a fiery single-vehicle accident Monday afternoon in Batholomew County.

The accident was reported at 4:15 p.m. Monday in the 13000 block of South 100 West, about six miles south of Columbus near I-65.

The caller reported seeing smoke in the area and went to investigate and found a vehicle had crashed into a tree and was engulfed in flames.

When deputies arrived, they were unable to see within the vehicle or get close enough to enter the vehicle. The responding deputies used three fire extinguishers however they were unable to put the fire out.

Southwest Volunteer Fire Dept and Wayne Township Fire Dept arrived and extinguished the fire.

A single occupant was found deceased inside the vehicle. The identity of the person has not yet been released.

The Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct their investigation which is ongoing. The identity of the victim will be released by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office.
