BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University Basketball freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako was arrested early Sunday morning in Bloomington.

According to Bloomington police 18-year-old Mgbako was detained around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, when officers responded to Taco Bell located at 3001 East Third Street after a report of a man refusing to leave the restaurant.

When officers arrived, the restaurant managers reported they had refused to provide service to a man in the drive-thru who was cursing and being rude to employees.

The man refused to identify himself but was later identified by police as Mgbako. Police told Mgbako to exit the drive-thru line, which he did, but refused to leave the property after Taco Bell managers requested he leave.

Police say that Mgbako “began to drive out of the lot, but then reversed his vehicle and parked again,” staying on the property for another 15 minutes.

Officers attempted to arrest Mgbako but he refused to exit his vehicle. Eventually, police used a baton to break open a car window to give Mgbako commands. According to police, officers had to forcibly remove him from his vehicle and he was detained on two Class A misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement.

Mgbako was booked into the Monroe County jail at 3:16 a.m. Sunday on a $1,000 surety bond or $500 cash. Mgbako posted bond at 5:25 a.m. and was released.

“IU Athletics is aware of the situation,” an IU athletic department spokesman said. “We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”

Mgbako, a five-star prospect in the 2023 class, was originally set to attend Duke but reopened his recruitment and chose IU over Kansas.
