Across America, there are numerous routes designed to showcase the beauty of the autumn leaves, passing through charming towns and along peaceful lakes.
Gunther VW Coconut Creek ran a survey of 3,000 respondents, asking them to rate their favorite routes to witness fall foliage, to help fellow travelers discover these picturesque routes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, drives near towns in Northeastern states dominated the top 10, with Seneca Trail US Route 219 in West Virginia voted as the nation’s favorite.
Indiana had 3 scenic drives voted among the country’s best for witnessing fall foliage this year.
Indiana’s top pick for fall foliage drives was Indiana’s Historic Pathways, voted in 88th place nationally. As the seasons change and autumn arrives, the byway is enveloped in a rich mix of colors. Hardwood forests that line the pathways burst into a spectrum of reds, oranges, and yellows, reflecting the Midwest’s quintessential fall palette. The gently rolling hills, punctuated by historic landmarks, farms, and rustic barns, create a picturesque backdrop against the autumnal hues.
The second most popular in the state, and 117th overall, was the Ohio River Scenic Byway.
Spanning approximately 302 miles, this byway offers travelers sweeping views of the river, densely wooded bluffs, and historic river towns with storied pasts. In the fall, the journey becomes particularly enchanting. The shoreline and hillsides are draped in a vibrant array of autumn colors, with trees transforming into hues of crimson, amber, and gold. These brilliant colors contrast beautifully with the deep blue of the Ohio River, creating a captivating visual display.
Third place in the state went to the Brown County State Park Tour.
It was voted in 128th position nationally. Nestled in the rolling hills of Brown County, the park explodes into a spectacular display of fall colors, drawing leaf-peepers from all around to marvel at its vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The park’s roads and trails wind through dense forests, offering awe-inspiring views of the surrounding hills and valleys blanketed in fall foliage. The park provides several scenic overlooks, where visitors can pause and immerse themselves in the stunning panoramas of the colorful landscape.

Falls Road (MD Route 25) in Maryland offers a picturesque journey through Baltimore County’s countryside. In autumn, the route transforms with trees donning vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold. Paralleling the Jones Falls stream, the road weaves through historic stone structures and farmlands, blending Maryland’s rich history with its seasonal beauty. #3 Allegheny Scenic Drive in Pennsylvania.
