Quit smoking for your lungs

BLOOMINGTON – October is a great time of year to start on your journey to tobacco
cessation. After all, it is National Healthy Lung Month.

“Tobacco smoke contains hundreds of toxic chemicals, and about 70 of them cause cancer,”
said IU Health Community Health Tobacco Prevention Coordinator Kristen Terry. “Make the
choice to quit tobacco and treat yourself to a fresh breath of fall air.”

Making a plan is a great next step after making the decision to quit.
“Making a quit plan helps set you up for success,” says Terry. “Identifying potential triggers,
planning how to overcome those things that make you crave tobacco and establishing why you
want to quit are just part of the process.”

She encourages individuals to start by visiting smokefree.gov/build-your-quit-plan.
