Firefighters evacuate residents after a report of a gas leak

BEDFORD – Several residents were evacuated Wednesday after a construction company working on the CAP Group property hit a natural gas line.

The incident was reported to the Bedford Police Department at 3:35 p.m. at 1005 Fourth Street.

Bedford Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene and along with police evacuated residents. Firefighters then closed the 4th and L streets intersection. They also closed L Street between 3rd and 5th streets.

The residents along L Street were evacuated from their homes. Residents along 4th and L streets were not evacuated.

Duke Energy was alerted to disconnected power in the area. The power was restored around 8:30 p.m. after the pipe was repaired.

Firefighters said wind helped dissipate the natural gas keeping the risks to a minimum.

Work at CAP Groups was not hindered.

It took Centerpoint Energy several hours to repair the leak.
