Blaze engulfs mobile home, killing one

STANFORD – One person died in a mobile home fire early Wednesday morning near Stanford in Monroe County.

The fire was called in by a neighbor who heard popping sounds and then saw the flames and called 911.

Monroe Fire Protection District Firefighters responded to Stanford Road around 4:30 a.m. and found the mobile home engulfed in flames and the roof had collapsed. Ellettsville Fire Department firefighters also responded.

Due to the extensive damage causing structural collapse and the intense flames firefighters could not make entry into the trailer and had to fight the fire in a defensive mode.

Once the fire was extinguished firefighters spent an extended period of time cutting debris out of the way and searching through the rubble for the occupant. Unfortunately, firefighters did locate the body of the resident still inside the structure.

The victim’s identity had not been confirmed. An autopsy was done Thursday in Terre Haute.
