One was injured, one arrested after crash at cemetery

BEDFORD – One driver was injured and the other arrested after a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday, September 12 at the intersection of M and 20th streets at 8:03 p.m. 

According to a Bedford Police report, 68-year-old Sally Burch, of Mitchell, was traveling south in a white 2021 Lexus on M Street and approaching 20th Street. That is when a white 2015 Ford Focus, driven by 42-year-old Derek Gilbertson, of Bedford, pulled in front of Burch’s vehicle while attempting to make a right turn onto M Street.

After the collision, Burch’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed through the fence around Green Hill Cemetery.

Witnesses confirmed Gilbertson failed to yield the right of way to Burch.

Police say Gilbertson appeared to be intoxicated. He blew 0.287 on a portable breathalyzer. He was transported to IU Health Hospital for a blood draw. He was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment, and OWI with a prior conviction.

Burch suffered a leg injury and was transported by ambulance to IU Health Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Stone City Collision. Damages were estimated between $25,001 to $50,000.
