Bedford Altrusa Club saving cap lids for needed Park Department benches

BEDFORD – The Bedford Altrusa Club met on Monday, September 11, 2023 at The Mixing Bowl.

President Bill Barnes passed out American flags from Fannie Lee to everyone present.  President Barnes asked the group to remember the tragedy of 9/11 and the losses that resulted from that horrible attack.

The group announced several donations were made.

  • $5.00 brag donation from Tonya Vandivier of LARK.
  • Sara Kern donated 16 one-half-gallon jugs of laundry soap for Life Pantry.
  • Marti Arvin and a friend donated a display of desktop containers, pens, and puzzle books to Core Nursing Home.

The group is in need of magazine donations to donate to area nursing homes.

Susie Turner announced she will use money donated to Altrusa to purchase children’s books for the Little Library at Avoca.

The treasurer’s report for August was presented by Sara Kern.  The ending balance in the regular operations fund is $3671.51.  The project fund balance is $10,659.75.

The Altrusa is selling nuts. All nuts are priced at $12.00 per bag.  The orders and monies must be turned in at the October Altrusa meeting on the 9th.  See any Altrusan to order.

Sammie K. Polley reported that the Bedford Parks Department wants six, six-foot benches and one, six-foot picnic table.  The Parks Department will take the caps to Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, IN, and pick up the completed benches and picnic table.  It will pay for the products and provide their tax-exempt number.  Sammie K. will be listed as the mentor on the form required by the company.

Altrusans and other helpers will do the sorting and weighing of caps and lids.  Amber plastic medicine bottles can be recycled provided they are label and glue-free and in bags only containing the plastic medicine bottles.  All caps and lids must be clean and dry when delivered to the company.  The caps and lids are being stored by Pat Kruchten, Tammy Harrell, Bill Barnes, and Sammie Palley.

The group is accepting caps from those who wish to donate.

Norma Hoffman reported that the delivery of the book bags to Bedford Head Start went well.  She encouraged volunteers to get involved in the delivery of book bags and to read to the students.  Mary Barnes reported that the delivery of book bags to Mitchell Head Start was also successful.  Patty Kirkman read to one class and Mary Barnes to another.  A motion was made and passed to have Sara Kern order books for the 2024 book bag project.

Special thanks to Becky Bailey, Gloria Owen, Kelly Meyers, Donna Rainey, Karen Weaver, and Loretta Bailey for providing a wonderful dinner.

The next Altrusa meeting will be held on October 9, 2023, at 5:30 at The Mixing Bowl.
