INDIANAPOLIS – Bedford North Lawrence finished second during the Franklin Central Invitational at Smock Golf Course during girls high school golf action on Saturday.
The Stars carded a team total of 339. Center Grove won the 16-team event with 325. BNL clipped Brownsburg, which also posted 339, on the fifth-player tiebreaker.
The format was unusual as each team played together as a fivesome. Chloe McFaddin paced the Stars, finishing third as an individual with a 7-over 79. She recorded 13 pars.
“The format was new and a little strange for us,” BNL coach Kori Johnston said. “Once we got over the weirdness of playing together, they settled in and finished strong. It was a little hard to focus and feel competitive playing together. It sort of made it feel like a practice. Luckily these girls do a great job of encouraging each other so they enjoyed the round.”
Kinleigh Root birdied the second and eighth holes while firing an 82, and Kenley Craig birdied the fifth while finishing with 87. Ellie Horton capped the BNL scoring with 91, while Sammie Nusbaum’s 95 was the tiebreaker for the runner-up spot.
“We tied our best 18-hole score so far this season and finished second, so we’ll take it,” Johnston said. “The course was new to us and had a lot of blind shots, so we did our best to adjust and play smart.”
BNL will compete in the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament on Monday at Timbergate.
