Lake County Prosecutor requests ISP to investigate multiple canine deaths

CROWN POINT – The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office has requested the Indiana State Police to investigate the recent deaths of multiple canines in Lake Station, Indiana.

This case originated on July 27, 2023, when numerous canines were discovered in the back of a box truck traveling from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to a training facility in Michigan.

Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police Detective Chris Eagles at 219-690-0043.

At least eight dogs died of heat-related injuries after being transported in the back of an uncooled cargo van through northern Indiana, authorities said.

The dogs that died were among 18 shepherds traveling from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to a training facility in Michigan City, Indiana, police said.

The driver, whom police did not name, said he was unaware that the air conditioning in the cargo area failed until he heard dogs barking. Then, he pulled off Interstate 94 at a convenience store and gas station in Lake Station, Indiana. When he opened the back, the driver found several dogs dead and others suffering. Numerous store employees and passersby stepped in to aid the dogs.

No further information will be given at this time as this is an active investigation.
