Sweet melons arrive at Bloomington Community Farners’ Market

BLOOMINGTON – Summer brings a variety of delicious, succulent melons to the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market. Bursting with juice and flavor, these stars of summer are easy to identify, but muskmelons come in many varieties including honeydews and cantaloupes.

The market is open on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Showers Common at 401 North Morton Street in Bloomington.

Delicious on their own, melons add sweetness to salads, cold soups, drinks, and sorbets. Although melons are refreshing when served chilled, refrigeration diminishes their flavor so serving at room temperature is ideal. Or try grilling them: cooking concentrates their sugars.

This week, The Market will be hosting two performances.

Leading off this Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. is the JDRD Quartet consisting of:

  • Nathaniel Jimenez
  • Elvin Debruicker
  • Max Rose
  • Elvin Deckard

The local young adult jazz quartet is based out of Bloomington, Indiana where they formed in their senior year of high school.

Following at 11:30 a.m. is the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Quintet. Members include:

  • Todd Davidson (first trumpet)
  • Phil DiLavore (second trumpet)
  • Harriet Fierman (horn)
  • Donna Lafferty (trombone)
  • Richard VanArsdale (tuba)

Founded in 1969, the BSO has a strong commitment to programming a wide range of both traditional classical repertoire and lesser-known works from the whole range of orchestral history, with a special focus on underrepresented composers.
