Woman arrested after switching UPCs on items at Walmart

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman is facing a theft charge after stealing items from Walmart.

Mary Frye

Bedford Police officers arrested 57-year-old Mary Frye on two counts of theft.

Investigators say Fry stole from the store on two separate visits on May 17th and 19th.

On May 19, Fry is accused of switching UPCs on a woman’s dress replacing it with a clearance UPS for $3. She also failed to scan a 24-pack of Budweiser Beer. Frye paid a total of $66.84, including tax, with the
theft total being $115.86, pre-tax. Frye then passed all final points of sale as she exited the building on
the grocery side, failing to render proper payment for all items of merchandise in her possession.

On May 17, Frye shopped through the store making several selections from women’s apparel and grocery. While on the sales floor, Frye selected a $1 clearance tag for a graphic t-shirt and kept it with her. Once finished making her selections, Frye took her items to a self-checkout. While at the register, Frye covered the UPC on the apparel items she selected with the $1 clearance graphic tee UPC she had selected on the sales floor. The food items were scanned appropriately, except for the 20
ounce Pepsi, which she bagged without scanning at the end of her transaction. Once finished scanning
her items, Frye rendered payment via EBT and a Walmart shopping card. Frye exited the building failing to render proper payment for all merchandise items in her possession prior to passing all final points of sale. The total amount paid in this case was $77.48, including tax. The total amount of theft in this case is $69.14, pre-tax.

Police interviewed Frye on June 2, and she denied the allegations.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
