MCS Board hears proposal for joint solar panel and roofing project

MITCHELL – Yesterday, the Mitchell Community School board met to hear the benefits of the proposed solar and roofing project. The initial stage of the project was approved by the board.

The solar project was brought forward by students a few years prior, and since then the school has looked into the possibility. Additionally, the need for new roofs also evidenced itself. Eventually, the two projects were addressed together, resulting in a joint project.

Over the years the school has researched the benefits of solar power and roof repairs. Some of the benefits include financial and environmental gains and support competitive pay for school employees which are key to the functionality of the schools.

Yesterday’s meeting established the maximum amount for the bond and the maximum scope of the project. It did not specify which building or facility will be completed first, or how large of a scale the project needs to be.

The roof plan has a lifetime of 30 years, and the solar panels a minimum of 25 years, though they will have a lifespan beyond that, with the plan to pay the entire project off in ten years.

The estimated direct energy savings is expected to be $250,000 per year.

The plan is to begin roof repairs this fall before winter, and when they are finished, implement solar panel installation in the spring of 2024.
