Man arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct

BEDFORD – A man was arrested early this morning after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of an intoxicated suicidal male at a home in the 1000 block of E Street.

James Murray

When police arrived, they spoke to the female caller who reported her husband 46-year-old James Murray had come home drunk and was making suicidal comments. She told Bedford Police Sgt. Toby Gerkin Murray left and was at a nearby home sleeping on a mattress on the porch.

Sgt. Gerkin and Officer Crulo located Murray on a porch of a vacant residence in the 500 block of 16th Street. Murray was laying on a mattress with a bottle of Fireball next to him. Police say Murray was intoxicated.

Murray raised his voice and said he had no intention of hurting himself and was just intoxicated and wanted to sleep. The officers began to walk back to their police vehicles, but Murray continued to yell at the officers after he was told multiple times to stop. Officers returned to the home to detain Murray.

Murray scooted away from the officers and had to be grabbed by the leg and pulled off the porch. He continued to struggle with officers grabbing the officer’s legs. He was eventually placed in handcuffs. While being walked to a police car he continued to scream and attempt to pull away from officers.

Murray was arrested on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest by force.
