Teen arrested after report of a fight at Thornton Park basketball courts

BEDFORD – On Wednesday, Bedford Police officers were requested to the Thornton Park basketball courts after a report of a fight in progress.

When officers arrived at 5:07 p.m. they found three people standing near the north basketball court. All three denied being involved in a fight.

Officer Jarrett Tedrow then noticed two male juveniles sprinting west through Beech Grove Cemetery. He radioed Captain Kody Emmons, who drove and looped around the cemetery. He found the two males and entered the cemetery at the northeast entrance. The boys then took off running west, jumping over a chain-link fence on the west side of the cemetery, and running across Brian Lane Way.

Captain Emmons ordered the two to stop but they ignored him.

Officer Tedrow was able to intercept the two males on Brian Lane Way, and used his patrol car megaphone to command the boys to stop, but the pair again ignored the command.

The boys then walked along the north side of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County on 19th Street. One teen was detained and the other continued to walk away from police. Police searched the area but were unable to locate him.

The teen detained denied involvement in a fight, saying he only ran because he did not like the police. He would not give away the other boy’s name.

The 15-year-old boy was transported to the Bedford Police Department and juvenile probation was contacted.

The teen, who was already involved in the Juvenile Problem Solving Court, was detained on charges of disorderly conduct for fighting, and resisting arrest for fleeing. He was also issued a citation for being a minor in possession of a tobacco product.

The teen was transported to Dickinson Juvenile Justice Center in Johnson County.
