New healthcare provider for county employees

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning approved changing the healthcare provider for county employees.

According to Miles Parker, of Parker Group, the county would save 12.32% by changing from United Healthcare to an IU Health Plan.

The contract with United Healthcare is up for renewal on August 1. The renewal plan would cost the county $3,877,816.32. Last year the commissioner paid $2,873,680.20 for the same plan.

The insurance committee received other bids including one from Anthem at $3,754,490.28 and three from IU Health for $2,028,644.16, $2,519,527.56, and $2,902,422.60, Trustmark for $3,417,323.76, CIGNA for $3,430,307.16 and Allstate submitted two bids for $2,821,425.40 and $4,760,151.62

The committee and commissioners voted to choose the IU Plan most compatible with their current health coverage at a cost of $2,519,527.56.

“We chose the best option,” said Commissioner Rodney Fish who also serves on the insurance committee. “What really stood out is that this is a two-year guaranteed rate and provides services compatible with what we have now.”
