2023 Limestone Capital Half Marathon, 5K, & 1 Mile Walk times to beat: register and prepare now

BEDFORD – A 5K run is 3.1 miles. Don’t be daunted by the distance. A 5K run is a great distance for a beginner. The beauty of running is you don’t need fancy equipment, and can train by just stepping out your front door.

Here’s the list of what you will need:

  • Running shoes that fit.
  • Comfortable running clothes.
  • A plan – choose a goal, train and run with a friend, warm up, and cool down.

The 9th annual Limestone Capital Half Marathon, 5K, & 1 Mile Walk sponsored by McIntyre Brothers is Saturday, October 7. The Expo, the kick-off event before the race, sponsored by Bedford Federal Savings Bank is Friday, October 6.

All races will start and finish in front of the Milwaukee Depot on the corner of 14th and J Streets and include a challenging course that only southern Indiana can offer.

Chris Taylor, age 14, finished last year’s half marathon in 1 hour 12 minutes, and 32 seconds.

Last year’s top finisher in the 5K category was Patrick CasaSanta, 23, of Bloomington with a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds.

“It was a beautiful run, a great ending with a long stretch uphill. I think everyone should run, it’s a good meditative practice,” CasaSanta said after finishing the race.

Justin Graham who finished second at 20 minutes and 20 seconds in Saturday’s race grew up in Bedford. He came back to his hometown to participate in the event.

“I encourage the community to continue this event,” Graham added.

Erika Batz crosses the finish line in the mile category in 11:47:48

Erika Batz, 8, crossed the finish line at 11:47:48 in the mile category.

“I practiced for about a month to be able to compete,” said Batz.

The race is not just for runners.

Elaine Hoffmann
Elaine Hoffmann walked during Saturdays Limestone Capital Half Marathon

Elaine Hoffmann, 74, didn’t run but walked a mile.

“I normally come in first in my age group, except one year when I had a competitor,” said Hoffman jokingly. “Most people my age usually do not want to admit how old they are, or they just cannot do it. I really enjoy it.”

And there is always room for group runners or walkers

The Lincoln Elementary School Running Club had over 30 students who took part in last year’s event.

“I am a huge believer in the lives it can change and the impact that it can make,” said Amy Spence a teacher at Lincoln Elementary and who began the running club.
