INDOT: Cameras soon to catch speeders in Indiana work zones

INDIANA – Speed cameras will be installed in some Indiana work zones by mid-2024 under new state law.

Gov. Eric Holcomb has signed House Enrolled Act 1015 into law. The law launches a pilot program that would allow speed cameras in four work zones across the state.

“We’d like to see it in place potentially later this construction season,” said Natalie Garrett, strategic communications director for the Indiana Department of Transportation. “However, that full deployment could push to next year.”

The law would protect construction workers and drivers going through work zones.

The technology would take a picture of your license plate if you’re going 11 miles per hour or more over the speed limit, and you would receive a ticket in the mail.

On the first violation, drivers receive a warning. A second offense results in a $75 fine. For additional violations, the fine jumps to $150.

INDOT will have to present lawmakers with a report on the program’s effectiveness by July 2028.

Thirty people were killed in work zones in Indiana in 2022, up from 14 in 2018. There were more than 1,400 crashes in work zones involving injuries in 2022, more than double the amount five years ago.
