One person injured in collision on State Road 37

MITCHELL – One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident on Sunday at State Road 37 near the intersection of Sir Charles Lane. The accident was reported at 9:57 p.m.

According to a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report, 16-year-old Caitlyn Netherton of Mitchell, was attempting to turn left through the asphalt section of the median and pull into a driveway at 8694 State Road 37. Caitlyn told police she saw the red Toyota Rav4 traveling north on State Road 37 but thought she had time to cross the highway. She accelerated her Oldsmobile Alero to cross the two lanes of traffic, but the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the Toyota, 36-year-old Amanda Hindsley, of Carmel, said she saw the vehicle in the median but thought the driver was making a U-turn to travel north on State Road 37.  Hindsley told police she pulled into the right lane, but the vehicle pulled into her path of travel and she didn’t have time to stop. Then the two vehicles collided.

A witness at the scene confirmed Netherton pulled out from the median in front of Hindsley’s vehicle, failing to yield the right of way.

Netherton was not injured. Hindsley suffered a bleeding laceration to her right hand. She was treated by EMS at the scene, then transported to IU Health Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Jackson’s Heavy Haul. Damages were estimated between $5,000 to $10,000.
