Staggs named male Athlete of the Year for second time

BNL three-sport standout Colton Staggs was named male Athlete of the Year for the second time.

BEDFORD – For the second consecutive year, three-sport standout Colton Staggs was named male Athlete of the Year by the WBIW.com website.

Staggs was an impact player in three BNL programs. He was a starter in the defensive backfield (with 25 tackles and one interception) in football as the Stars won a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title and won a first-round sectional game. In basketball, he was a catalyst for another HHC title while scoring 11.2 points and earning All-HHC First Team honors. He helped the Stars post a 16-7 record and claim a share of their first league title since 2011.

In golf, Staggs was a IHSAA regional qualifier after carding a 78 in the sectional at Cascades, and he finished with a strong 76 in the regional at Country Oaks. His 18-hole scoring average was 77.

Other notable athletes who enjoyed outstanding years included Jett Jones (football, basketball and golf), Colten Leach (basketball), Jonah Bailey (track and cross country), Memphis Louden (football), Greg Gilbert (football), Dylan Nikirk (football), Ryker Hughes (football and baseball), Cal Gates (football and baseball), Kline Woodward (football and baseball), Cole Baker (swimming), Joseph Brazzell (soccer), Billy Cline (soccer), Jorj Filler (wrestling) and Brayden Patterson (track).

WBIW.com will name a female Athlete of the Year. The list of the Top 10 stories for the 2022-23 school year will also be announced.
