Monroe County Public Library to open Southwest branch on June 9

BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Public Library will host a grand opening at its southwest branch on Friday, June 9 at 890 West Gordon Pike, near Batchelor Middle School.

To celebrate the grand opening, the Library will host a public event for Monroe County residents from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. that will include food, special events and performances, and opportunities to enjoy the new spaces within the Southwest Branch.

Schedule of events:

  • 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.: IU Jacobs School of Music Harpist, Theresa Labuda
  • 2:30 p.m.: Opening ceremony and ribbon cutting with a performance by members of the Batchelor Middle School Choir
  • 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.: Bloomington High School North Jazz Combo, Elvin DeBruicker (tenor sax), Charlie Edwards (drums), Leo Messier (guitar), and Noah Smith (bass)
  • 4 p.m. until 5 p.m.: Ensembles from the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra
  • 5 p.m. until 6 p.m.: IU Jacobs School of Music Jazz Combo, Samuel Butler (trumpet), Peter Lerner (guitar), Kyle Cantrell (bass), and Miles Damaso (drums)
  • 5:30 p.m. until 5:40 p.m. Batchelor Middle School Jazz Combo, led by Band and Choir Director Joel Brainard
  • 6 p.m. until 6:20 p.m.: Batchelor Middle School Orchestra Ensemble, led by Orchestra Director Marianne Ritter

We’ll also have two cooking demos:

  • 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. Bright beet hummus demonstration by Kayte Young, producer, and host of Earth Eats
  • 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Tyropitakia (cheese pies) demonstration by Olga Kalentzidou, a lecturer from the Indiana University Department of Geography

The new library is 42,000 square feet including a garage.

Inside the Southwest Branch

The branch will include a teaching kitchen, a teen room, multiple conference rooms, and an amphitheater: a place open to the public, with outdoor seating and vegetation.
