Man falls asleep at a stop sign and now faces OWI charges

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Thursday, June 1 when Bedford Police officers were called to the 3108 block of John Williams Boulevard after a report a male had fallen asleep in a vehicle at the stop sign.

Bedford Police Department received numerous 911 calls reporting the incident.

When police arrived they found the blue Chevrolet car pulling onto Williams Crossing and pulling up to a female.

The officer stopped the driver, 28-year-old Jeremy New, and the female walked away from the scene. Police say the female was visibly upset and the officer attempted to stop the woman but she continued to walk away. Other officers were alerted and began to look for the female.

An officer located the woman and learned there was an active protective order in place preventing New from contacting the woman.

Police say New was sweating profusely and had bloodshot eyes. He was asked to exit the vehicle. He told police he had taken his prescription of Suboxone and Klonopin earlier in the day.

New failed a field sobriety test but passed others.

He was then asked to consent to a chemical test but New refused. A warrant was issued by Circuit Court Judge Nathan Nikirk to obtain a blood draw and New was transported to IU Health Hospital.

New was arrested on charges of invasion of privacy and is facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and OWI endangerment pending the results of the blood test.

New’s vehicle was towed by Mikels Wrecker Service.
